Most of that advice focuses on one thing: becoming better at using technology. If anyone had a reason to tell graduates that technical skills would define the next decade, it was her. Instead, she focused on something technology cannot easily replicate. As the technology improves, the ability to simply use these tools becomes less of a competitive advantage because millions of other people can use them too. What becomes valuable instead is deciding what should be done with them. AI can generate dozens of marketing campaigns, but it cannot tell you which one aligns with your company's strategy. It can write thousands of lines of code, but it cannot determine whether the product is solving a meaningful problem. It can summarize years of research in seconds, but it cannot decide which conclusions deserve action. Those aren't technical questions. They require judgment, context, and an understanding of people, qualities that become more valuable, not less, as technology becomes increasingly capable. That idea appears repeatedly throughout Lisa Su's speech. Reflecting on advice she received early in her career, she encouraged graduates to "run toward the hardest problems." At first, it sounds like familiar motivational advice, but within the context of AI, it takes on a different meaning. Routine work eventually becomes standardized, and standardized work eventually becomes automated. Hard problems remain difficult because they involve ambiguity, competing priorities, incomplete information, and decisions without obvious answers. Those are precisely the situations where leadership begins to matter. Another detail that's easy to overlook is that Lisa Su didn't stop at purpose. She paired it with judgment and courage, three qualities that reinforce one another. Purpose provides direction, judgment helps determine the right course of action, and courage is what allows people to act even when the decision carries uncertainty or risk.
